My American flag is one of the last one fisherman and boaters see on the way out of the harbor- it's at Embarcadero and Beach (across from the kite shop). It's at half mast in memory and honor of David and will be the rest of the week. As a former merchant mariner and resident of Morro Bay, I mourn the loss of one of our fishing community. My sincere condolences to the Kubiak family. I am so sorry for your loss. Jeff Eckles

Home is the sailor, home from sea:
Her far-borne canvas furled
The ship pours shining on the quay
The plunder of the world.
Home is the hunter from the hill:
Fast in the boundless snare
All flesh lies taken at his will
And every fowl of air.
'Tis evening on the moorland free,
The starlit wave is still:
Home is the sailor from the sea,
The hunter from the hill.

Bob Doll, please take a moment and think before you type. Reflect upon the three or four most significant emotional events in your life and picture someone/anyone approaching you and making a comment about you or your situation that would be callous, crude, or demeaning. Your Avatar is also a reflection of you but that too is free choice in a free society. I would ask that you grow up and lessen the types of comments you would hear from a typical teenage (like we all once were). You may learn the true meaning of compassion in return.

The fishing community has lost a fine man and fisherman. Our hearts go out to his parents, brother and sister, his lovely wife and children as well as the Larsen and Bolton families. We are all heartbroken and numb. When you are a fishing family, you hope and pray every time your loved ones head to sea that they will return home safe. It was not to be this time, and we mourn his loss. David will be greatly missed by the Morro Bay fishing fleet and all who knew and loved him.

Thanks, Crabber, for the additional light you shed about this sad situation. As so often happens, the news that comes out at first is sketchy and in bits & pieces. I consider most of these on-line updates to be "raw feed" and thus subject to correction/updating. I know, I know, it would be nice to have it polished and fine-tuned but such is life in the fast lane. Again, Crabber, thanks and my sympathy and prayers to Mr. Kubiak's family.

bob doll the fishing community and all fishing families are heartbroken tonight. David was truly respected. He had been fishing for spot prawns, not crab, just trying to make a living. His wife is living every fisherman's wife's worst nightmare: The "you need to come down to the harbor...." Every fishing family has lived this story.
The FBI and Sheriff became involved as the F/V Axel was outside of state waters and is a federally registered vessel. The fisherman who found David spoke broken English and much was lost in translation--thus the "investigation". David was a third generation fisherman in this country, his boat was named after his Grandfather Axel. A huge loss is being felt tonight and many tears are falling.

The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's department says 47 year-old David Kubiak of Los Osos was found Tuesday about five miles off the beach near Cambria. The Coast Guard watched the man's fishing boat as it drifted about 60 miles off-shore. Kubiak had been fishing at the time of the incident.
The sheriff's department says it appears Kubiak fell from the vessel and attempted to secure himself to one of the buoys from his boat. FBI agents were sent to the scene to determine if foul play was involved.

DAK on Compliments
He always always told me I was the perfect woman. I had just the perfect body for him and that he would love me no matter how big I got (but that I better plan on running beside the truck if i got too big.)
DAK A Wild Thing
"Roar" he said one morning from the bathroom, "I'll eat you up!". He was reading that book on the toilet...Silly DAK. :)
We (Jaime, Paige, Nicky, Tilly and baby Gunnar (and Dylan D.)) watched that movie at our house tonight (some people were in a pile on the big chair). The plan had been to go and see the movie together (D, P, T and G). We watched Whip It in SLO instead and it was good.
When I saw Max in his tiny boat, I instantly thought of David in his tiny boat; just him out ther in the sea. Everyday he was safe, back home, until he wasn't anymore. So that must've been super wild out there for him. My heart just breaks when I think of him. He said, "I'm like Max".

DAK Obituary
David Allen Kubiak beloved father, husband, and son died in a tragic fishing accident Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009. David was born to Donald J. and Diane L. Kubiak in Newport Beach, Calif., in July 1962. David''s greatest passion was commercial fishing, like his grandfather Axel, father Don, and uncles Harlen, Richard and Allen before him. David often reminisced about birthdays at sea with his father. David proved to be a true man at age 15, when he and his brother, Chris, helped their father bring the family''s F/V (fishing vessel) from Texas through the Panama Canal home to Morro Bay. The family repeated this adventure three years later to bring his grandfather Axel''s F/V Skagerrak, F/V Cassie and F/V Lille Baelt home to Morro Bay. He attended Morro Bay High School and married Paige L. Johnson on December 27, 1986, and again November 11, 2003. David served on of the Central California Cable Fisheries Committee and was a lifelong advocate of the commercial fishing industry. He was a true fisherman at sea, providing for his family. David was doing what he loved, he never gave up and fought to stay alive to get home to the people who love him. The Kubiak family would like to thank the Untied States Coast Guard and Meo of the F/V Miss Allison for their assistance. Survivors include his parents, Don and Diane Kubiak; the love of his life, Paige; son, Gunnar; daughter, Taliah; mother-in-law, Cherrie Johnson; brother, Christopher (Teresa); niece, Brooke; sister Cassie (Gene); his tightly knit extended family; the Larsens and Boltons; Uncle Ron Kubiak; and the extended family of commercial fishermen and wonderful friends. A funeral has been scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, at Benedict-Rettey Mortuary Chapel, 1401 Quintana Road in Morro Bay. A celebration of David''s life will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, at the Morro Bay Vet''s Hall. The David Kubiak Memorial Trust Fund has been set up at Rabobank - donations will be accepted at any branch of the bank to help his family in this time of great sorrow. Los Osos fisherman's death is a loss to dwindling brethren
David Allen Kubiak apparently fell off his boat while setting traps for prawns; he was not wearing a protective suit

Central Coast fishermen mourned one of their own on Wednesday, a day after 47-year-old David Allen Kubiak fell off his boat and was found five miles off the coast of Cambria. Kubiak, of Los Osos, appeared to have fallen overboard sometime overnight Monday, sheriff’s spokesman Rob Bryn said. His body was discovered at 10:40 Tuesday morning.
The 39-foot boat, Axel, which is ported in Morro Bay, was spotted by someone on another fishing boat named Miss Allison, officials said. Kubiak died from salt water drowning with complications from hypothermia, Bryn said. A member of the local fishing community said the already small group suffered a tremendous loss with the death of the third-generation fisherman. “David is one of us. A very good one, very well-liked by everyone,” said Jeremiah O’Brien, a member of the Morro Bay Commercial Fishermen’s Association, who has known Kubiak for about 30 years. The Axel, which had drifted about 60 miles offshore when it was found, was towed in to the harbor about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.Kubiak was fishing for prawns on his last trip, O’Brien said, adding that he also fished for crabs and salmon. Kubiak had been fishing since an early age mainly because his grandfather and father were also fishermen, O’Brien said.
“It’s always hard when it hits so close to home,” O’Brien said. “We feel terrible.” O’Brien said Kubiak named the boat, which he purchased a few years ago, after his grandfather.Bryn said Kubiak was likely laying out traps when he fell off the boat. He was tied to one of the buoys attached to the trap as a flotation device, Bryn said. He was not wearing a protective suit designed to keep fishermen warm in cold water, Bryn said. No foul play is suspected at this point. The FBI and Coast Guard are expected to look at the vessel, Bryn said.
